How to Register for Sales Tax

Though the process may have slight variations depending on which state laws you’re following, in general there are three steps to registers to collect sales tax: 

  1. Gather business and contact information
  2. Visit your state’s department of revenue website
  3. Click on the ‘Sales and Use Tax’ section of the website and click to register.

You must individually register to collect sales tax in each state where you have met the registration requirements (the threshold of sales/transactions we previously mentioned). You can find a full list of state websites here. You’ll also need to register for a sales tax permit, which you’ll also find the application for on your state’s tax authority website.
