As a dog walker there are a few essentials that you’ll need to get your hands on before you start walking your four-legged clients. We’ve put together a little checklist for you below:
- Good leashes: A good leash is something you’ll need for every dog walk. Most often your clients will provide this, but it’s always a good idea to have a backup at hand just in case. Even if your client’s are fine with their dogs being off lead while you’re walking them, you need to be prepared for all eventualities to safeguard your pets.
- Biodegradable poop bags: Picking up poop is an inevitable part of the job description. Make sure you’re equipped whenever you’re out walking and ready to clean up after your clients. Use biodegradable bags to show your human clients that you’re doing your part to look after the environment.
- Dog walking bag: No dog walker should go anywhere without a trusty dog walking bag. Use it to carry smaller items such as treats, toys, leads, poo bags, and your phone, and free up your hands during your walks.
- A water bottle and collapsible bowl: You need to ensure that you’re able to keep the pets in your care well hydrated, no matter where you go.
- Clothing for all weathers: As we know, the weather can change in an instant. Make sure your work wardrobe includes everything from shorts to waterproof coats and trousers, hoodies and vest tops. Also, if you’re going to be walking early in the morning or late at night, especially during winter, make sure you have some reflective clothing (for you and your dogs) to protect you in the dark.
- Treats: Nothing earns a dog’s trust quite like a tasty treat. Having a stash of treats while you’re out walking will help you to keep control of your dogs and can help as a training aid while you teach them to obey your commands.
